What Is Rotator Cuff Therapy?
If you've ever damaged your shoulder, you know that it can be very difficult to go about your daily tasks. As a matter of fact, it can sometimes lead to a halt in many of your normal activities. A shoulder injury might not even be noticed until it gets progressively worse. This means that it's important to get treatment for you shoulder as soon as you notice the problem.
The rotator cuff is generally the cause of shoulder pain. This is the group of four muscles and the tendons that surround the shoulder joint. They stabilize the joint and allow for a broad range of motion and it is quite common for those tendons to tear, which, sooner or later, leads to pain and weakness of the shoulder.
Most injuries to the shoulder can be treated without surgery. Rotator cuff therapy can usually do enough to restore the shoulder to its original, pain free usage. However, rotator cuff physical therapy is something that should be prescribed by your doctor.
Any rotator cuff therapy program will consist especially of exercises for the shoulder joint. These are done to strengthen the muscles and help them to be more flexible and toned. When they are, the shoulder is once again stable all the structures in the rotator cuff can perform their job correctly.
The stretching and strengthening exercises that are to be done in your rotator cuff therapy should be recommended by your doctor. If you have an injury, it is best not to follow advice found on the Internet, as there has not been a specific diagnosis. Your doctor will know what measures are best in your situation.
The process of strengthening the shoulder and healing tears in the tendon may be a slow one. A complete recovery may take as long as a year! However, following the proper program is the best way to ensure the best possible results and help to make it much less likely that you will suffer a repeat injury on the same shoulder.
Another thing that is essential to rotator cuff recovery is blood flow to the shoulder. This area does not naturally have a lot of blood flowing through it, so stretching, massage and application of heat can help increase the blood flow and help speed up the healing process.
Rotator cuff physical therapy is also done after a rotator cuff surgery. It is essential to keep the shoulder moving in order to prevent the growth of scar tissue. It also aids in healing the structures that have been damaged in the surgery. If you have surgery, you will undergo rotator cuff physical therapy while in the hospital and will be shown what exercises to continue at home for the duration of your recovery.
