Do You Have A Rotator Cuff Injury?

Our bodies are complex machines full of moving parts that work together to give us range of motion and the ability to do virtually anything we want to in our daily activities and exercises. The body works well almost all the time, which is a miracle, considering how many things could go wrong, but of course sometimes something does go wrong.

The shoulder is made up of bones, muscles and tendons. At the point where the clavicle, scapula and humerous bones meet there are four muscles and various tendons that hold those bones in place and make it possible to move your arms in almost any direction without it popping out of socket or other damage being done.

The rotator cuff is the system of muscles and tendons that are doing the work in the shoulder area. They have a very important job, as we use our arms in so many ways every day. They are not particularly strong muscles, but normally can meet the demands we place on them.

However, this isn't always true. A rotator cuff injury is fairly common, and most especially for athletes who are stretching and working the body to its limits. However, rotator cuff injuries are quite normal in less active people as well.

You might not always know if you have a rotator cuff injury. Of course it may happen that you feel tension or sharp pain suddenly while doing something strenuous, but it is even more common to notice a pain or weakness in the shoulder later in the day or when you wake up in the morning.

Symptoms of a rotator cuff injury are feeling pain when lowering or lifting the arm above the head as well as weakness when rotating the arm or lifting it. They might be mild to severe and almost always develop over time. For this reason it's important to get a diagnosis early when you start having problems with your shoulder.

Another reason to act quickly is that if you leave it alone, tissue may develop around the rotator cuff leading eventually to a frozen shoulder, where movement is severely restricted.

Different types of rotator cuff injuries include a tear, tendonitis and rotator cuff syndrome, which develops with wear and tear over time. Treatment for these type of injuries usually include the RICE method (rest, ice, compression, elevation) and a visit to the doctor to determine the extent of the damage.

Because the rotator cuff is rather weak, particularly after an injury to the area it is important to do exercises specified by your doctor. Also, doing shoulder exercises is a good method of prevention of a rotator cuff injury, and it's succeeding complications, restrictions and potential surgical treatments and recovery.
